![]() August 8th, 2014 marks the day as Lakshmi's (The Hindu Goddess of Wealth and all around goodness) festival day. The official word for this day is: Varalakshmi Vratam. Ashtalaksmi is a multi-deity with a Goddess presiding over each attribute: Wealth, Earth, Learning, Love, Fame, Peace, Pleasure, and Strength. This is a festival day for women and it is the female head of households who lead and conduct the worship of Lakshmi on this day. Lakshmi is a deity who likes to give gifts and offer help and it is said that she is especially generous on her festival day. Traditional worship of her festival day would include lighting ghee lamps and creating foods and worship rituals that might not be in the pantry or store of the average western householder but I think if you would like to ask Lakshmi for Her Grace and to grant you a gift, creating a small altar for Her with flowers and adorning her space with gold jewelry (she is the Goddess of wealth after all) She might be inclined to send a boon your way. While traditionally men are not welcome to perform the worship services of this festival day, women can ask for boons on behalf of the men in their lives. If inclined you may want to recite the pooja (prayer) for this day: In Sanskrit पद्मसने पद्मकरे सर्व लोकैक पूजिते नारायणप्रिये देवि सुप्रीता भव सर्वदा॥ How to say it: Padmaasane Padmakare । sarva lokaika poojithe Narayanapriya devi supreethaa bhava sarvada What it means: (She) who sits in the lotus, (she) who holds the lotus ("Lotus-sitter, Lotus-holder") (She) to whom all the worlds pray Goddess who is dear to Narayana be kind/good to me Need help with the prayer part? Youtube to the rescue! I found this lovely spoken/sung version of prayers to Lakshmi, it even has the alliterative parts on there so you can pray along: http://youtu.be/FTdwrs_TzcA Since this is a Tarot blog then of course I am going to also offer that after you have made your worship and your request that you pull some cards to see what is happening for you in each area. Pull one card for each area- 1. What do I need to know about my wealth for this upcoming year? 2. How can I best protect and nurture the world around me? 3. What do I most need to learn right now? 4. What will be the theme of love this year for me? 5. How will my reputation grow this year? 6. What can I do to cultivate more peace in my life? 7. What do I need to know about accepting pleasure into my life? 8. What is the true nature of my personal strength? 9. In what area, Lakshmi, will you grant me a boon? Happy Festival Day!!
