Moving onto the suit of Swords we go from the earthy, round bodied and complex jewel toned wines to something more... airy, intellectual, clean, and precise. I fancy that the Swords suit would drink many dry white wines for the same reasons.
Tarot of the Rennaisance
Our King of Swords does enjoy a good glass of Ice Wine which is most typically made of Cabernet Franc. Cab Franc is known for its ability to blend with other vintages to produce a terrifically well structured wine just like this good King.
Intellect and communication alone are not everything and this King and the intellectual wind he blows moves ships, sways opinion and is the ephemeral thought before the action starts. Cab Franc can also have notes of graphite, leaves and bell peppers. Enjoy a glass with the King as he pours over his latest castle blue prints in his bright, airy laboratory.
Anyone know whose deck?
This Queen would most likely be staring down at you with a cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The hints of grape fruit, lemon and grass is very lovely drinking alone, like this Queen; no pairing is necessary for enjoyment! This wine would always be aged in steel giving it a clean finish. Light, refreshing and very dry this Queen loves straightforward, uncomplicated vintages.
Simple, precise and yet refined this is the Queen in all things. This would also most likely be a small batch from a much unknown local winery. This Queen would never be about “mass consumption”wines as she prefers quality over quantity and would do without rather than have inferior.
Enjoy your glass as you listen to her pontificate upon the nature of human origins in her bright solarium.
The Knight of Swords also follows in his suit’s penchant for white wines by enjoying a steel casked Chardonnay after a long day of intellectually stimulating debates and conversation. Chardonnay is a bright, high energy wine full of green apple with a lip smacking finish. Personally I enjoy a Chardonnay that is buttery and oaky but not for the Swords Knight.
This varietal can also be honey on the tongue and I have always thought this particular court card is more complicated then he is given credit for. When we couple intellect with the expansive drive of a Knight we know that in him we see a passionate driven focus on a belief system. For this reason, I chose to give him something a touch less clear.
A nice clean vintage of this Chardonnay will grace the table of the two of you of playing a game of chess; you must know that he will win!
The Page of Swords does enjoy her crisp, clean, light Pinot Grigio with its notes of grass, hay and sometimes green apple. This page loves to learn and seems to know a little but about everything, not yet getting bogged down into mastery at any field and delighting in dabbling within them all.
Pinot Grigio has almost no finish and dissipates quickly on the palate; refreshing and simple and especially suited to a summer's day. This Page is about the pure enjoyment of learning; there is no need to produce but only to be the excitement that comes with undertaking a challenging process. This page is pure Flow.
Pinot Grigio fits the noncommittal, light attitude of the Page. Enjoy a glass with her in her personal Library pouring over historical volumes and alchemical formulae.
