Can seeing an intuitive augment other mental health interventions? Seeing an intuitive or a Tarot reader should never replace counseling or any other mental health modalities but they can add to a map of care for people needing help dealing with certain issues in their life. Whereas traditional counseling may encompass conversations around childhood issues or deep family dynamics to get at the root of behavior, intuitive coaching focuses on putting out the fire that resides within; working first to alleviate anxiety by providing clarity and next steps in difficult and current situations. Many people find themselves going to traditional therapies (even when they are not working) because it is the socially acceptable thing to do, spending months and thousands of dollars to come out the end of it feeling, "Meh, I guess it worked?" while resisting nontraditional therapies that could have quick and successful results. Intuitive coaching, Tarot, and more have that "woo woo" factor that actually get in the way of the amazing work these tools are capable of. Just like personal massage in the 70s and acupuncture until very recently, society takes time to come around and accept nontraditional modes of therapy. Social disincentives to seek out therapies like intuitive coaching keep people from actually trying out something that may work great for them. Some people do not seek out intuitive coaching or Tarot because they are embarrassed or they feel it is a quack therapy that does not address real issues. Both personal attitudes and stereotyping can keep people from the very help that would fit them best. The most important factor in any therapy is checking in with yourself to see if it feels right. If intuitive coaching feels like it is working: that anxiety or confusion or doubt are replaced with empowerment, positive feelings and a sense of direction, then that is the best yardstick to go by. So often we do things that do not feel good or work for us because 'everyone says how great this is'. (Personally, no matter how hard I try, how awesome everyone tells me it is... I just cannot get into Yoga or like eggplant or 50 Shades of Gray, call me a rebel.) And sometimes we do not do things we find we have an affinity for because other people will disparage it, "You mean.... you see a psychic?! I thought you were (insert adjective of choice here)." Do you wear a big ol hat and sunglasses when you leave your reader's office? So while there are social stigmas to seeing intuitive coaching and getting Tarot readings, there are surprising little gems hidden in the fabric of our society slowly mainstreaming a therapy that works. NPR did a piece about seeing a psychic vs. a therapist which I was surprised to run across, "Psychics Are the New Psychologists"... So what do you think? Have you found intuitive coaching helpful? Or are you ready to have that experience yourself? Have you been embarrassed to tell your friends even though it really worked? I'd love to hear your story.
